You don’t have to head to the coast for a beach vacation or waterfront home. In fact, if you live in New York City, Westchester, Montreal, or even Boston, Lake George beaches are all within a reasonable driving distance, and home prices are more affordable than Montauk or Cape Cod. Tucked into NY’s Adirondacks, our clean sandy beaches offer panoramic mountain views and crystal clear waters so clean they qualify as drinking water – truly an idyllic place for sunbathing, swimming, boating, fishing and a variety of water sports.
Whether you’re planning a trip to the region, or looking to make Lake George your permanent vacation home, here’s everything you need to know about our public beaches.
Million Dollar Beach
At the southernmost point of Lake George, Million Dollar Beach boasts an expansive stretch of sand and a perfect view of the steamboats coming and going from shore. Lake George’s most popular beach is open from 8am to 8pm between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend, and swimming is permitted in the designated areas when lifeguards are on duty. The state-run beach also features a volleyball court, picnic tables and grills, snack bar and a bathhouse with restrooms, showers and changing facilities. A boat launch adjacent to the beach area opens at 6am and includes a free boat inspection & washing station to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Named for what is said to have been the cost to build it, Million Dollar Beach and its picnic area are free to the pubic, however parking costs $10 per car, $5 per motorcycle and $50 per bus. There are 30 spaces designated for the boat launch, but you’ll need to get their early, as they fill up quickly.
Usher Park Beach
Quieter and smaller than neighboring Million Dollar Beach, Usher Park Beach is ideal for families with small children. Just past Million Dollar Beach, heading north on Route 9L, you’ll see a parking lot and playground on your left. The beach itself is located down a steep hill, and there are state workers in golf carts to shuttle you up and down, if needed. The swimming area is shallow enough for the little ones and lifeguards are on duty from 10am to 6pm, mid-June through Labor Day. You’ll also find restroom facilities and a picnic area with grills on site, as well as tennis and basketball courts, open 8am to 8pm.
Parking at Usher Park Beach and use of the beach and park are free. The two pavilions in the park can be reserved by calling the town office at (518) 668-5722 and completing an application form.
Lake George Dog Beach
For those dog days of summer, check out Lake George Dog Beach. Both dogs and their owners are permitted on this stretch of sand and grass between Million Dollar Beach and the Lake George Steamboat Company. There are no lifeguards or facilities on the beach, however there are a limited number of benches and several waste disposal stations available. Dogs are allowed off leash and in the water, but owners are expected to clean up after their pets and maintain control at all times.
Dog beach is free to people and pets, and metered parking is available nearby.
Shepard Park Beach
Located on Canada Street in the heart of Lake George Village, Shepard Park Beach offers a large lawn with plenty of shade and a small sandy beach close to Lake George Village restaurants and shopping. There are restrooms and a small playground on site, as well as an open-air amphitheater used for a free concerts and events. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer and fishing is permitted off the public dock on the southwest shore.
Shephard Park Beach is free, however there is no designated parking lot. Beach-goers must use the metered parking throughout the Village, or walk or bike from the nearby hotels and homes.
