Enjoy More Peace & Quiet
Ski towns get very busy on weekends, and, in an effort to maximize space, developers tend to build more condos and townhouses near the mountain than single family homes. As a result, there’s not a lot of privacy or quiet. On the other hand, a lake house located 30 minutes or more away from the mountain may mean a slightly longer drive to the lift lines, shopping and restaurants, but it’s also more likely to offer square footage, acreage and seclusion.

Why pay a premium for a home you only use part of the year, when you can buy a second home that’s desirable in all seasons? A ski-in, ski-out property sounds amazing, but it gets little to no use in the summer, while a home on Fire Island might be idyllic from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but then it sits vacant all winter.

Here you’ll find plenty of properties in charming mountain towns close to lakes and lifts, including Lake George, Lake Luzerne, Great Lake Sacandaga, Saranac Lake, Fourth Lake, Paradox Lake and literally dozens of other smaller bodies of water. And all are located within a reasonable drive of a handful of relatively small, family-friendly ski mountains.
Nearby Ski Mountains
There’s Gore Mountain in North Creek with over 2500 vertical feet, and the smaller Oak Mountain Ski Center in Speculator with a 650 foot drop. West Mountain in Queensbury offers night skiing, while McCauley Mountain in Old Forge boasts big fun in a small package. And of course, for the most advanced terrain in the east, you can always head north to Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid.
