When I talk with families who are moving, many times our conversations will turn to matters that have to do with their children. How are the schools in Lake George? What activities are there for children their age? What sports are popular among teenagers? How are the area pediatricians?
These are all important topics, no doubt. But families who are moving should also be sure to give consideration to how the move will impact their pets, particularly dogs and cats that may currently have an environment and routine that they love. Even a move across the lake in the same Adirondack town can cause confusion and anxiety for some pets.
So what should you keep in mind and be prepared for if you are moving with your pets?
- Veterinarians. Research pet doctors in the area you are moving to. You want to be sure you find a good one, and it’s always possible you’ll need one before your first night’s sleep in your new home.
- Exercise. Where can you give your dog some exercise? Is your yard big enough (and fenced in) for him to run around? Are the streets around your home a slow traffic area where you can safely walk your dog? Or do you need to find where there are pet friendly fields or even a dog park? What about pet friendly hikes in the Adirondacks?
- Public Places. Which local businesses welcome your little best friend. A great thing about Lake George is that there are many pet friendly restaurants right in the town. That way you don’t have to leave your pet home alone while you go out and explore.
- Supplies and Toys. Where are the nearest pet supply stores? Whether a local store or a retail chain, it is likely you’ll need something for your pet shortly after you move in.
- Pet Friendly Lodging. Maybe you can’t spend the first night in your home for some reason. Or maybe you have guests with pets coming to the area. Make sure you are making a reservation at a hotel that allows pets.
Luckily for any pet owner thinking about moving to the Lake George region, this is a great place if you have a cat or dog. It is home to great veterinarians, plenty of space for dogs to run around and meet other dogs, pet daycare and boarding facilities, and many other pet friendly amenities and attractions. As I travel the area for my clients, it seems that families in the Adirondacks own dogs at a much higher rate than what the ASPCA gives (that almost half of all households in America have a dog). And even those who don’t own a pet here definitely have a soft spot in their heart for them.
So if you have pets of your own and are looking to move to Lake George, give me a call. I’m happy to talk about all the great things that this area has to offer cats and dogs, from top notch veterinarians to pet friendly restaurants. Lake George is a terrific place for all members of your family to move to, including your pets.
