5 Unique Leaf Peeping Adventures in the Adirondacks

From the Adirondack Mountains to our crystal clear lakes, the Lake George and Bolton Landing area is renowned for its bold and beautiful fall foliage. If you want to check out the colors, you could take a scenic drive, pedal along a tree-lined bike trail, or even check out one of these hikes, but if you’re looking for something truly different, here are 5 unique leaf peeping adventures worth exploring this fall.

Scenic Skyrides

Get a panoramic view of the Southern Adirondacks and High Peak Mountains in all their fall glory on board Gore Mountain’s Skyride. Open Saturdays and Sunday through October 13, Gore Mountain offers both open-air chair lifts and gondola rides. Tickets range from $12 to $22 and kids age 6 and under ride for free. For a weekend of free entertainment and fall fun, checkout Gore Mountain’s Harvest Fest, October 12-13.

Hot Air Balloon Rides

Arguably one of the more romantic ways to view the fall foliage, a hot air balloon ride is definitely one of the most awe-inspiring alternatives. Several local pilots offer fall leaf peeping flights with views of the Adirondack Mountains, Lake George, Glens Falls and Saratoga. Check out Adirondack Balloon Flights, Ballooning Adventures and Majestic Balloon Flights for more information.

There’s nothing quite like flying through the trees when they’re set ablaze in bright oranges, yellows and reds. If traditional fall foliage trips put you to sleep, a fall ziplining adventure in the Adirondacks might be just what you need. Adirondack Extreme Adventure Course offers ziplining in Bolton Landing through November, and Lake Luzerne’s Adirondack Adventure Center is open through October 8.

Whitewater Rafting

For a hefty dose of adventure with your leaf peeping, why not try whitewater rafting? The fall colors are stunning along the Adirondack waterways, and many of the local rafting companies also provide a meal before or after your trip, allowing for more time to soak up the scenery. Enjoy whitewater rafting tours on the Sacandaga River through September 28 with the Sacandaga Outdoor Center, or ride the rapids on the Hudson River Gorge through October 13 with Adirondack Adventures.

Boat Cruises

You haven’t truly experienced fall foliage in the Adirondacks until you’ve seen it from the lake. Both the Lake George Steamboat Company and Lake George Shoreline Cruises offer a variety of brunch, lunch and historic sightseeing cruises through mid-October. Enjoy spectacular leaf-peeping views you simply won’t find anywhere else in the Adirondacks.
