Can’t Afford Lake George? Here Are Some Other Options

Think waterfront real estate on Lake George is out of your reach? While it’s true that lakefront homes on Lake George can sell for high prices, and it is one of the most popular lakes in the southern Adirondacks, it’s far from the only one.

There are over 20 lakes in Warren County alone, and plenty more throughout the Adirondack Park. Get a glimpse of seven other lakes close to Lake George that are great spots to look for waterfront property for sale.

Brant Lake

Brant Lake, also known as “the pond” to residents, is roughly 20 minutes from Lake George. The area has great biking trails, with boating and fishing opportunities on the lake.

Friends Lake

Friends Lake is one of the few private bodies of water you’ll find in the Lake George region. The lake is home to Friends Lake Inn and the Fern Lodge, and to some lucky lakefront residents who prefer uncrowded waters. Friends Lake is about 30 minutes from Lake George.

  • 14 feet mean depth, 30 feet max
  • Fish species: brown bullhead, largemouth bass, northern pike, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch
  • No public access
  • Motorboats allowed, but no jet skis

Glen Lake

Glen Lake is in the town of Queensbury, and is about 12 minutes south of Lake George. There are two islands on the eastern side of the lake, and you’ll find the Docksider Restaurant and the Full Moon Bar & Grill near its shores.

  • 18 feet mean depth, 50 feet max
  • Fish species: brown bullhead, chain pickerel, largemouth pass, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch
  • No motorboats allowed

Lake Luzerne

Lake Luzerne is situated close to where the Hudson River and Sacandaga Rivers meet; Stewart Brook connects the lake to these rivers. The Luzerne Music Center and Adirondack Folk School are close by, and the lake is about 20 minutes from Lake George.

Loon Lake

Loon Lake is situated within Chestertown, about 20 minutes from Lake George. OP Frederick’s, Circle B Ranch, and C+C Snowmobile Tours are located on or close to the lake, and Kipp Mountain and Stewart Mountain trailheads are close by for prime hiking.

  • 15 feet mean depth, 32 feet max
  • Fish species: brown bullhead, largemouth bass, northern pike, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch
  • There is one public boat launch/wash station near the beach
  • Motorboats allowed at no wake speeds
  • Boat inspections are mandatory, as on Lake George

Schroon Lake

The largest lake on this list, Schroon Lake is a classic Adirondack lake where you’ll find Eagle Point Campground, a 49-acre Word of Life Island with a camp for teens, and a thriving arts and culture scene in the town of the same name. Schroon Lake is about 25 minutes from Lake George.

  • 4,003 acres
  • 56 feet mean depth, 152 feet max
  • Fish species: brown bullhead, chain pickerel, lake trout, landlocked salmon, northern pike, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, smelt, yellow perch
  • There are three public boat launches: at Eagle Point Campground, in Horicon on the southern end of the lake, and on Dock Street at the northern end of the lake
  • Motorboats allowed

Trout Lake

Trout Lake is situated about 3 1/2 miles west of Lake George. Depending on what side of the lake you’re looking at waterfront homes for sale, it could be a Diamond Point or Bolton Landing address. It’s about a 5-minute drive from Cat and Thomas Mountains.

  • 185 acres
  • 20 feet mean depth, 70 to 75 feet max
  • Fish species: brown bullhead, chain pickerel, lake route, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, smelt, splake, yellow perch
  • No public property exists on the lake
  • Personal watercraft is banned, and a boat’s horsepower is limited to 50
