Bolton Landing: The Ideal Lakefront Getaway

Wealthy vacationers have been making Bolton Landing their personal paradise away from busy city life since the early 1800s. The Town of Bolton was formed from the Town of Thurman in 1799; Bolton Landing is a hamlet inside Bolton.

The historic Sagamore Hotel is considered by many to be one of the most upscale, luxurious resorts on the lake today. It’s undoubtedly one of the most famous aspects of Bolton Landing. The Sagamore sits on its own island, with its own golf course, multiple dining options, a spa, and everything else one could need for a lakeside vacation.

The Sagamore is only one of many mansions along “Millionaire’s Row,” a stretch of the lake that pays homage to the affluent travelers of yesteryear, and that is sometimes highlighted during local boat tours and cruises.

Visitors to the area today can choose from a variety of lodging accommodations from resorts to cabin rentals. Vacationers and residents alike love to make use of the two Lake George beaches in Bolton Landing, at Rogers Memorial Park and Veteran’s Memorial Park.

More Than a Tourist Destination

As with Lake George and other southern Adirondack municipalities, Bolton Landing embraced the lumber industry during the early 19th century. Saws and grist mills were constructed in the area, laying a foundation for jobs, and for families to settle. By 1805, there was more than one schoolhouse, and by 1811, a church.

Today, the Bolton Landing Central School District is an above-average, public school district, with under 200 students in pre-K through 12, and a student teacher ratio of 7:1. Bolton Central School, the only school in the district, is ranked 123rd in New York State, and it’s #1 in the Glens Falls, NY Metro Area High Schools.

A favorable school district isn’t the only thing Bolton Landing has going for it to encourage year-round residency.

Hiking, Culture & Community

As a prime municipality within the Adirondack Park, it’s not surprising that Bolton Landing is a hotspot for outdoor recreationists. Besides being right on the water, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, and other watersports, there are some popular hiking trails and parks.

The Cat and Thomas Mountains and Tongue Mountain Range are more equipped for experienced hikers, while Amy’s Park and the Pinnacle (view from summit shown above) are more beginner-friendly or moderate. There’s also Pole Hill Pond, and the Goodwin Preserve. Even The Sembrich and Up Yonda Farm have their own hiking trails.
