What to Look for in a Small Cabin for Sale in the Adirondacks

If you are searching for a large or small cabin for sale in the Adirondacks, there are a few things you must consider before choosing the one best for you. As with any other real estate purchase, you must factor in the location and size. However, with a cabin, these factors must be thought of somewhat differently. You should also consider whether the cabin is suitable to live in year-round.

Do You Need an Adirondack Cabin Suitable for Year-Round Living?

Before purchasing a small cabin for sale in the Adirondacks, consider the following questions. Your answer may affect the homes appropriate for you.

Do you plan on living in the cabin year-round?

If you plan on living in the cabin year-round, you may need to prioritize school districts, how accessible your property is in the winter snow, how close you are to work, having good internet service, and other factors. While you may want a secluded cabin deep in the Adirondacks, something closer to Lake George and civilization may be more ideal if you plan on living there year-round.

Is it a second home?

For a cabin that you intend on using as a second home, you may not be as picky with distance from town. For example, if you don’t plan on visiting during the winter, how snowy roads get will be irrelevant to you. Likewise, if you only plan to visit for a short period of time, visits to the nearest store might be unnecessary. You might be content staying in your peaceful secluded cabin for a few weeks. However, I would suggest checking out some of my tips on owning a second home.

Choosing the Location of a Small Cabin in the Adirondacks

Proximity to Water

If you plan on buying a large or small cabin in the Adirondacks, make sure to consider how close you want to be to a lake. The Adirondack region has many beautiful lakes such as Lake George, Brant Lake, Glen Lake, Lake Luzerne, and many others. Would you rather have lake access on your property, be within walking distance, be a short drive away, or just have the picturesque views from a distance? With how many wonderful lakes are in the area, keep in mind how close you want to be to the water before you purchase a small cabin in the Adirondacks.

Mountain Views

Stunning Adirondack mountain views and scenic dirt roads winding through a quiet forest create a sense of calm. Everything about life in the mountains appeals to the senses, from the fresh mountain air to beautiful scenery and peaceful quiet vibes. There are few things as peaceful as a small cabin in the Adirondacks. However, a drawback may be that you have trouble accessing your property in the winter months. Snowplows won’t be as focused on keeping back roads clear of snow. The further from civilization you get, the more challenging it may be to reach your property or leave it to get supplies. Distance from Nearest Town

When selecting a small cabin for sale in Lake George or the Adirondacks, I suggest being mindful of how far the nearest town is. You should balance a property’s peaceful rural vibes with how accessible it is. Are you prepared to drive hours just to get to town? No? Maybe you should select something a little closer. Would you prefer to get away from traffic, city lights, and other ruckus? If so, you may want to aim further from town. You will want your cabin to be peaceful but also accessible. Do You Prefer a Small Cabin or One with Room for Guests?

Especially if you intend to use your cabin as a second home, you may want to consider getting a larger home to bring along guests. While peaceful solo excursions are nice from time to time, it’s also nice to have the option to bring company. For some individuals, it can be frustrating to have a second home too small for guests. Save yourself from hindsight and make sure you purchase a cabin large enough for everyone you may want to invite.

Likewise, if you plan on living in the cabin for more than a couple weeks at a time, a larger space would be more ideal. Even with a minimalist lifestyle, small cabins can get crowded with items quickly. Blankets, pillows, throw rugs, candles, and rustic decor will all make your cabin cozier and more comfortable, but they also take up space. Make sure your cabin has room for whatever you intend to use it for and all the supplies you need.
